Before returning to New Zealand in 2003 Richard lived for years at the Rochester Zen Center, a Buddist Community in upstate New York. He is also an accomplished film-maker. On the Eve of Never Departing, while a prose work, nevertheless shines von Sturmer's clear poetic light on a number of subjects, ranging from growing up in Auckland in the 1970's to Zen encounters in T'ang Dynasty China. Landscapes and paintings play a predominant role, and the reader will find him/herself exploring the south-western deserts of the United States, the canvases of Antonello da Messina and Casper David Friedrich, details from the early Renaissance, echoes of German Romanticism and the streets of his own Auckland City. In 2003 he received the brief Writer's Award for a two-month writer-in-residency on Great Barrier Island. |
